I am Rachel Sip, the principal at Merlo Station High School. We are a small, nurturing school-community focusing on students who need extra support. Merlo Station is an option school in the Beaverton School District which means students are only admitted after an application process.

Beginning this year, we implemented the Discovery program, a six-week course providing a systematic approach to strengthen social-emotional skills. Discovery builds a foundation for rigorous academic learning and college and career readiness.

One of the unique aspects of this program is offering a challenge course experience.  We have partnered with Synergo, a respected local organization that provides highly trained facilitators to lead our students in a variety of team building exercises on the Oregon Episcopal School campus. The challenge course is strategically scheduled in the middle of the Discovery program to focus on the application, analysis, and evaluation of skills.

After the success we saw with the first challenge course, we felt compelled to offer this experience to every child who enters Merlo Station. Since we enroll new students each hexter (6 sessions per school year), we just need $2000 to fund the challenge courses for the rest of the year.

We ask that you partner with us to provide our best efforts in helping our students achieve skills that will prepare them for not just now, but for the rest of their lives.

Here are just some of the responses we have had from our students and teachers:

“Synergo showed me how a positive community makes life easier.” - Noah

“Synergo was a valuable experience for not only myself, but my classmates. This experience was able to pull us out of our comfort zones and become more comfortable with each other. Part of being uncomfortable together really helped us connect as a group.” - Grace

“Synergo helped me learn how to problem solve conflicts with other people. This experience helped me communicate with my classmates at a new level.”
- Andrea

“We have had the opportunity to work alongside the people of Synergo. This experience has been very valuable for both the students and the staff. I felt like the activities and lessons they included into the day were really thoughtful and relevant to high school students learning about how to be part of a team. Students left the experience feeling more connected and engaged with each other. I was impressed with how they could accommodate all skill levels into the activities. All students worked together, communicated, stayed positive and had fun as they navigated through the various challenges. I can say without hesitation that this experience was both valuable and relevant to our students at Merlo.” - Mark Lea, Discovery/PE/Health/Culinary Teacher
