About New Bethany Ministries

New Bethany Ministries offers hope  and support to  people who experience  poverty, hunger, and homelessness . We  believe that all people, regardless of circumstances, should be treated with dignity and  care  without judgment. No one who seeks help is turned away.

We continually strive to build a community of hope and support for those who seek help and for those who desire to make a difference in the Lehigh Valley. We address immediate needs such as food and basic hygiene ,  provide short-term housing solutions ,  and encourage long-term change that will lift individuals out of poverty through housing, case management ,  and employment assistance. We welcome dedicated staff, volunteers ,  and donors who recognize that they have an important role to play in building a community that can make a difference.

A brief history of Luminaria Night

Luminaria Night started 23 years ago in the neighborhood west of Linden Street and north of Johnston Drive. Three neighbors wanted to recreate the tradition of connecting homes with the light of candles in bags at the holiday season. Through the sale of kits, they raised $300 that first year, all of which was donated to a family in need. In the early years of the event, several different charities benefited from Luminaria Night. Among them was New Bethany Ministries, which provides meals, financial services, and housing to poor, hungry, homeless and mentally ill individuals and families in the Lehigh Valley. Because the founders of the event were so impressed with the outreach of New Bethany, they decided to affiliate themselves permanently in 2003. From a desire to connect with neighbors and light up a small neighborhood at the holidays, Luminaria Night has grown to a valley-wide collaboration illuminating many neighborhoods in a beautiful evening of light and giving.  In 2019, the event surpassed over $1 Million raised for New Bethany Ministries over the lifetime of the event. We are fortunate to have community members who care about their neighbors facing poverty, homelessness, mental illness and hunger!

With thanks to our sponsors, including PennCap Properties, Lowes, Quikrete, Olympus, and Nativity Cathedral, 100% of the proceeds go directly to New Bethany Ministries services.
