Honoring Larry Itliong: A Call for Recognition in Downtown San José
Larry Itliong was a Filipino American civil rights leader who played a pivotal role in the American Labor Movement. As a leader of the 1965 Delano Grape Strike, Itliong fought tirelessly for better working conditions and fair wages for all farmworkers. Despite his groundbreaking contributions, his story remains largely forgotten, absent from textbooks and unacknowledged in the places where history is made visible. It’s time to change that.
It is our vision to share his story by renaming the walking path, Paseo de San Antonio, to Larry Itliong Way. In its current state, this path is simply a means to get from point A to B. Once renamed to Larry Itliong Way, the path transforms from an ordinary thoroughfare into a meaningful landmark that elevates awareness, honors a Filipino American civil rights hero, and inspires community pride.
In alignment with San José State University’s plan to revitalize the campus to reflect San José’s diverse cultural landscape, the renaming to Larry Itliong Way will further honor the Labor Movement and highlight the impact of Filipino Americans in American history. Larry Itliong Way will culminate at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, symbolically uniting these legacies, reminding future generations that the fight for justice was never won alone.
Join local leaders Assemblymember Kalra, SJSU President Teniente-Matson, and members of the Itliong and Chavez families in supporting this project. Together, we can make Larry Itliong Way a permanent part of San José’s story.
With gratitude and hope,
Larry Itliong Way Committee
