Honoring Our Heroes: The USS Anchorage Monument Project

For decades, the sailors who stood watch aboard Landing Ship Dock (LSD) vessels answered the call with unmatched grit, courage, and quiet sacrifice. Today, we have a profound responsibility to ensure their legacy—and the historic service of every single Landing Ship Dock ever built—is never forgotten.

We are raising funds to construct a permanent, enduring monument along the San Diego waterfront to honor USS Anchorage (LSD 36) and all 48 Landing Ship Docks that proudly served our nation.

The Vision: A Place of Reflection and Respect

Our goal is to establish this inspiring tribute in Tuna Harbor Park, ideally situated right next to the iconic USS Midway Museum along the San Diego waterfront. This will be far more than a stone memorial; it will be a sacred gathering place for veterans, families, and visitors from around the world to reflect on the extraordinary dedication of our amphibious Navy.

The Monument Design

Crafted from elegant black granite and highlighted with striking blue and gray granite accents, the monument will stand on a sturdy foundation as a permanent fixture of maritime history.

• The Anchorage Legacy: One dedicated section will celebrate USS Anchorage (LSD 36), featuring key operational statistics and a powerful historical narrative that underscores her vital role.

• The LSD Fleet: Another major section will pay tribute to all 48 Landing Ship Docks, categorized across all six distinct classes, preserving the history of these legendary amphibious vessels and the sailors who manned them. An example of the wording can be found here.
