International School of Beaverton hasn't added a story.
A growing body of research has shown social media use to have negative effects on mental health, especially among adolescents, with links to depression and anxiety. Evan Robbins, the ISB school social worker, and two 12th graders, Fadwa and Lilli, are going to launch a 7-day "Social Media Detox" challenge and incentivize participation by offering successful participates opportunities to win raffled prizes. This fundraiser is to purchase prizes that will serve as incentives.
The goal is to increase awareness of our dependence on social media and hopefully provide a glimpse of what life feels like when disconnected from it. Like at most schools, ISB students use social media heavily on a daily basis and it will not be easy to give up for a week. In order to motivate participation we propose offering very attractive top prizes and smaller secondary prizes that will be raffled off to challenge participants who can prove they did not engage in social media use March 2 through March 8.
There will be four categories of participants: middle school students, high school students, ISB staff and entire ISB households. An ISB family is donating a 3-night stay at their coastal vacation home for the top prize for the winning household and through Beaverton Education Foundation, we are raising funds to purchase the remaining prizes. We aim to provide numerous prizes so prospective participants feel winning is achievable and we want to have especially lucrative top prizes that will get the attention of the ISB community.
Our supporters will be helping us generate enthusiasm to participate and to attract as many participants out of our student body of 870 as possible. Maximizing the number of people participating will hopefully encourage our ISB community to have a healthier relationship with social media and minimize its detrimental effects on mental health. Proposed prizes to be purchased with funds: 2 sets of AirPods for Middle and High School raffle winners, therapeutic massage gift card for staff winner, 5 gift cards of $50 for households and 15 gift cards of $20 for secondary individual winners.
