Every kindergartner needs to learn mathematical skills and concepts. These skills and concepts are best taught through relevant, meaningful contexts, and play! Doing a daily calendar has been a part of a kindergarten routines, but has it always been utilized as greatly as it could be?

As a beginning kindergarten teacher, the traditional calendar doesn't allow my students the opportunity to activity engage with many different mathematical concepts at once. It focuses on a few math concepts the entire year and isn't as engaging for students as we need. 

This new and improved calendar would allow me to teach mathematical concepts through activities and games by giving my students ongoing practice with key skills and concepts, including:

• Counting
• Reading and writing numerals to 20
• Comparing sets and numbers
• Modeling and solving addition and subtraction problems
• Identifying, describing, and comparing shapes in the environment

Over the entire school year this calendar would provide 170 days' worth of meaningful activities and games to meet most of the kindergarten math standards. That translates to play and fun for my incoming kindergartners. Every day students would look forward to seeing what activities and games would come next.  By teaching mathematical concepts in a fun and engaging way my students won't know they are learning new information. The passion from the excitement would drive them to work even if it's challenging. 

Working in a title one school (and because of the pandemic) I will have many students who didn't have the opportunity to attend preschool. Coming into kindergarten with little to no previous schooling I need to optimize every moment I have with my students. Having students play and interact with the materials will develop a deeper understanding of the mathematical concepts. 

If you donate to this project, it means you would be coming along side me to help the next generation have a successful school career.  If I can give my students (who are 5 and 6) a solid foundation they will be able to conquer most challenges life has to offer. The mathematical skills they would gain from this interactive calendar would bring math alive and develop a passion for learning that would last many years to come.
