Humble beginnings
I think with any great start there are humble beginnings. This is how the Hangover Bowl began. I was introduced to Disc Golf in 1992 by a friend. From the moment I threw my first Pro D Cyclone, I was hooked. We played casual golf with a group of friends every Sunday on and off for about 20 years. We had three “Tournaments”, I use this term loosely because it was about 5 guys throwing discs, The Turkey Shoot Out (Thanksgiving Day), The Kris Kringle Shoot out (Christmas morning), and The Hangover Bowl (News Years Day). Life moved on and our Sunday ritual faded as families were created and people moved, but the 3 events continued.
During the last 13 years, I met my amazing wife and started a family. Through her, I met and cultivated a group of homeschool friends and watched our families grow. Over the past 3 years this group of families has lost four spouses. At the time of their passing we rallied, we supported, and we did what we could. I wanted to more, but did not know how.
Two years ago my brother in-law convinced me to take Disc Golf more serious. I started playing in leagues, mainly with the Gone Discin league and in several local tournaments. In that year this reignited my passion for the sport and I met some amazing people who have became lifelong friends.
Upon the sudden and tragic loss of my good friend Mike Beers in December 2015, I knew what I could do to help. I talked to my Disc Golf friends about The Hangover Bowl, and figured if we could get 20 guys together we could raise a couple hundred bucks for Mike’s family. Well, this awe inspiring group helped me take this idea of 20 people and started something I could not imagine. My friends contacted their friends. I had a stranger call me out of the blue and tell me he had four Disc Golf companies that would like to donate various goods to the event. After a long conversation, mostly me saying thank you, I thought… what just happened? Following that conversation I was contacted by many more people wanting to help. On January 1st of 2016 we had 68 people come out to play & support Mike’s family. Each person brought something to donate and each person was there to lend a hand. We had a raffle, an auction, and had prizes for the top three teams. Remember, I wanted to raise a couple hundred dollars….we raised $2300 for Mike’s family that first year.
With success of the 2016 Hangover Bowl, we decided to make this an annual event. Mike’s wife Nicole, wanted some of the proceeds to go to the Michigan Small Farms Council, an organization that Mike passionately supported. Mike was a founding board member of the Michigan Small Farms Council, their mission is to protect and extend the rights of urban, suburban, and rural small-scale farming operations throughout the state. After contacting the the council, they accepted half of the proceeds and the remainder went to Mike’s family. The 2017 event was inspirational; more than 20 vendors donated, 125 people came out to play, and we raised about $3500. Beginning with our next Hangover Bowl tournament all funds collected will be distributed to the Michigan Small Farms Council, Mike’s family, and into an account for surviving children of families that have lost a parent.
In closing, I ask you to share this group, I ask you to participate, I ask to you cherish the people in your lives, I ask you to ask for help when you need it (I did, and look what happened), and I ask you donate to this event that happens on January 1st every year! Thank you all for making this possible!
