Hello my friends
my name is Mohamed Feras Tellawi , I was born in Syria, and my family and I lived in Saraqeb city (about 50km south of Aleppo). Then, in 2012, after some incidents happened which threatened our safety, we decided to escape the war and the threat of ISIS by fleeing to Jordan. I was 13 years old at the time. Now 18 years old, I have graduated from high school here in Jordan, and I currently live in the city of New Zarqa with my father, mother and four younger siblings. I am very fortunate to have come this far, considering what other Syrian boys my age have gone through.
However, my father’s health is slowly deteriorating. He has begun to have heart problems, and he has stopped working. As the eldest child, I am looking for a way to take care of my family. Originally, we made plans to move to Washington State in the USA as refugees, where I could complete my higher education before getting a job. After waiting for one whole year, we were able to schedule one of our final meetings with the International Office of Migration (IOM) in February 2017. I have some very kind friends, Nina LaPiana and Ryan Mayer, at the University of Washington who tried to sponsor my family’s entry into the US. However, just days before our scheduled meeting, Trump’s first ‘Muslim ban’ order came into effect. The next day, the IOM called us to cancel our meeting, since the order suspended the entry of Syrian refugees into the US indefinitely.
We next tried contacting several Canadian sponsors/charities in British Columbia which were close to Washington State, but we received no responses by e-mail or phone. I have since reviewed my options, and have decided to study somewhere closer to my family. My plan now is to study physics at the Jordan University for Science and Technology. With my degree, I will be able to get a job that generates enough income for me to support the rest of my family.
As a Syrian national, however, I will have to pay the ‘foreigner’ tuition fees to attend college in Jordan. I will not be able to afford it on my own, because after including the cost of using this platform and the transfer fees charged by the bank, the total cost of my degree will be US$40,000.
Because of this, I need your help. No donation is too small, and I will be extremely grateful for any amount that you can spare to help me study and provide for my family. If you are unable to contribute money, that’s fine, I will be grateful if you could even just share my campaign with your family and friends and spread the word.
Thank you so, so much. May God bless you and your families.
P.S. My English is not actually very good, because I had to teach myself English using mainly the duolingo app. This post was edited by my English-speaking friends, for whom I am very grateful.
