But now, due to unexpected and complex engine issues, FIFI is grounded.
Repairs are already underway thanks to the heroic efforts of our volunteers and maintenance crew. However, the cost is significant—over $350,000! Delays in FIFI’s repair timeline mean thousands may miss the rare chance to see and hear a B-29 in flight. About the Engines: Why FIFI Is Grounded
Many supporters have asked: What exactly went wrong with FIFI’s engines?
During routine pre-flight engine run-up procedures, our crew discovered an issue with a critical component: the impeller spinner discharge valve—part of the supercharger system on the Curtiss-Wright R-3350 engines. This valve, which helps regulate fuel-air pressure during engine operation, was not functioning correctly.
After consultations with expert mechanics and overhaul specialists familiar with this complex radial engine, we determined that engines #2 and #4 required removal for in-depth repair. Thanks to our dedicated maintenance crew and volunteers, both engines were safely removed, crated, and shipped to California in just a few days—a tremendous feat.
The engines are now in the capable hands of Vintage Aircraft Radial, Inc., led by Mike Nixon and his team. There, the faulty valves are being tested and calibrated to original manufacturer specifications using a flow bench. Once repaired, each engine will be fully reassembled and undergo rigorous test bed runs to ensure reliability and safety before being reinstalled on FIFI.
This was an unexpected and complex repair—but thanks to the swift action of our team and the expertise of Vintage Radials, work is already well underway.
