Fir Grove Elementary, Cristina Tomkins hasn't added a story.
The Culture of Care Team at Fir Grove Elementary is comprised of the Principal, Counselor, Psychologist, Student Success Coach, Specialists, and Teachers from every grade level and department. Together, we have recognized an increase in the number of students at Fir Grove with social, emotional, and behavioral skill deficits. These deficits can result in classroom disruptions, impeding teacher effectiveness, and student learning.
Examples of the skill deficits include:
Cognitive Flexibility Skills: difficulty with change and transitions, recognizing grey areas
Social Thinking Skills: difficulty with social cues, attention seeking, lack of empathy
Emotional and Self-Regulation Skills: difficulty with losing a game, managing anger/anxiety, unable to calm before acting
Motor Skills: difficulty in engaging in physical activities or sustaining a seated position on the carpet
Attention and Working Memory Skills: difficulty with sustained attention, maintaining focus and considering a range of solutions to solve problems
To address these skill deficits, the Culture of Care Team would like to create a Wellness Learning Center (WLC). The WLC will be a quiet and calm space where students can meet with an adult one on one or in a small group. The WLC will have sensory tools, calming aids, activities, books, a movement center, and a relaxation station. All of these resources will be selected and created with the purpose of addressing one or more of the skill deficits listed above. The WLC will also house sensory regulation kits that can be checked out to classrooms. These kits will contain materials to help students regulate their emotions and behaviors to maximize their ability to learn without disrupting the classroom environment.
Our hope is that through regularly scheduled visits to the Wellness Learning Center, our students will gain the skills necessary to be successful at school, both as an individual student and as contributing members of the classroom community.
