Elmonica Elementary School, Music Program hasn't added a story.
My name is Jillian Comrie and I will be joining the Elmonica Elementary team as a new music teacher this year. I am looking forward to getting to know my students and guiding them on their journey as young musicians!
I have been in search of a cost-effective and practical
instrument to teach as an accompaniment to singing in the classroom
setting and I found the perfect answer in the ukulele. I began
teaching the ukulele last year and was very excited by the
possibilities this instrument provided for my students. We were able
to use the ukulele to practice rhythms, steady beat, ensemble
playing and music theory. My younger students were able to strum the
strings in time with the music, while my older students had begun to
play chords on their own. I also noticed that older students were
more inspired to sing when they could accompany themselves.
The ukulele is a great size for small hands and has an
immediately sweet, melodious sound. It is not too loud or too quiet
but perfectly accompanies developing voices. Most of all,
giving students the opportunity to play an instrument that is
currently popular among real musicians, helps them make real-world
connections to what they are learning. These connections help
students understand that music is a subject that will provide them
with life-long enjoyment, as well as giving them many examples of
great musicians they can aspire to emulate.
The ukulele I would like to purchase is the Kala KA-15s, which
a reliable instrument with a mellow sound that students will love to
play. Please help my students and I start the year out strong with
my instrument of choice for the elementary classroom!
Goal: I am asking for $750 in order to buy a set of 15
ukuleles ($50 ea)
This number will allow the students to play in pairs, which I
believe helps them learn teamwork. In fact, students often learn
concepts better if they coach each other on what they are learning.
Thank you for your support of the music program at Elmonica Elementary!
