Leaside DECA is teaming up with One Girl Can to empower girls in Kenya!
We are sponsoring two girls' secondary school tuition in Kenya, and
contributing towards rebuilding an urgently needed school in the
Kibera slums in Nairobi. This is your opportunity to creating
lasting change in the lives of these girls in Kenya, shifting them
from cycles of poverty to cycles of empowerment!
About the secondary school scholarships:
While primary school is free in Kenya, secondary school is not. With limited resources, families in poverty will more commonly choose to pay for a boy’s secondary education. Globally boys are 90% more likely to be enrolled in secondary school than girls. Never the less, educated women will invest 90% of their income back into their families and communities to create long-lasting change.
About Damaris Nythenya Kambua:
Damaris is 15 years old. She and her five siblings are raised by a single mother. When her mother fell ill, her family relied on the support of neighbors to survive. Damaris had to skip school often in order to do house chores while her mother went out looking for money. Regardless of the adversity she has faced, Damaris is strong-willed and determined to succeed in her education. She would like to become a journalist in the future. In addition, Damaris would like to raise orphans so that they do not experience the same circumstances she had to.
About Hannah Nyambura Wang'ombe:
Hannah is 15 years old. She has four other siblings, three of which are illiterate and have received no schooling. When her parents worked in the business setting they were able to provide basic needs such as food and clothing. In addition, they were able to pay for her school fees. Unfortunately, when the business Hannah's parents worked at failed, they were no longer able to provide at the same capacity. Some nights, Hannah and her parents would go to sleep hungry. The following day she would attend school hungry. The clothes Hannah wore were torn and she would often be sent home due to the inability to pay school fees. Hannah works extremely hard when she is in school and aspires to become a cardiologist when she is older.
About Ushirika School in Kibera, Nairobi:
Kibera is the biggest slum in Africa and one of the biggest in
the world, housing approximately one million people.
One Girl Can began working in Kibera in 2009 when we built both the elementary and secondary school Ushirika. Given the increase in demand for the school with now over 500 students attending between both schools, we are at a critical point to rebuild both schools. Without a safe and improved cinder-block structure these 500 girls could lose their education and fall through the cracks of society.
About One Girl Can:
One Girl Can is breaking the cycle of poverty and impacting
gender equality through education and mentorship. Their holistic model
empowers a girl from the time she leaves primary school until the day
she gains meaningful employment.
