Chad Girardin hasn't added a story.
Hey all, it's Chad here again, coming at you from Aprons for Gloves at the Eastside boxing gym on the DTES. Once again I will be representing the amazing Native owned The Village Table restaurant in deep cove. They have supported me so much with fundraising and buying me the boxing gear. They are true philanthropists. I love taking my amazing wife there for all the amazing food! mmmm.
As you may or may not know, East Side Boxing has developed programs to support and encourage kids on the lower east side; where they are guided to spend their time and energy training in the sport of boxing, give Women self defense classes and aid the front line workers with self care. Frankly, I wish I had a place and a program like this when I was younger and when I worked on the DTES in the homeless shelters. . Therefore, I am proud to be contributing to this cause through fundraising, and putting myself through rigorous training to ultimately put on a good, fun, fight for the cause.
This cause is personal for me because I am a child protection Social Worker at a local Indigenous organization, and I know kids from our case loads who access this after school program. I personally know the background of these young kids and youths, and Eastside Boxing is a safe haven for these kids. It's a place where they can go after school; where they only get punched if they want to and where they can openly express their emotions in a safe place. It's a place where their anger can be used productively and expressed in an appropriate venue. Trust me when I say that this program does amazing things for so many young kids and youths.
I have devoted my life to helping people, and I wish there were more programs like this that helped kids and youth to maneuver very difficult times in their lives before it turns to mental and addiction problems. Unfortunately, we all know that the Government falls short in many areas and protecting the kids in the community of the DTES is one of them. So, where the Government falls short, the community step up! I am asking you to be a part of that community.
I am giving you an opportunity to contribute to making a difference for a youth on the lower East Side through this program. Any amount you have to give goes straight to making these programs available. Also as an added bonus, you can get a night out at the Commodore to witness a live boxing match with all kinds of fighters that are putting themselves on the line to contribute to better lives on the DTES buy buying a very affordable ticket.
I hope that you can help support this amazing cause, and please note that any donation over $500 in cash or cheque is tax deducible! Please be generous in helping the kids of the DTES. If you need even more incentive I am willing to provide oil changes, brake changes, light mechanical work, counselling sessions, personal training, boot camp sessions for you and your friends, babysitting, car washing, advocacy, custom made traditionally hunted and scraped hand drums; you name it! They ask us to raise $2000 each but my goal is $5000. Hope you have a great day and thanks for being a part of my community.
Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2018
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise $2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
