My name is Michelle Day, and I teach first grade at Chehalem Elementary School. My students are a group of diverse learners that love school!  They have access to materials at school but often, resources at home are scarce. This project would allow over 100 first graders access to check out 5 or more books at a time to read at home with their families.

These boxes will contain high-interest, common themed books with characters that the children know and love. My hope is that these books will be cherished and give kids an exciting way to share their love for literacy at home.

The greatest help a parent can do for their child is read at home. This leads to children becoming better readers, better writers, and it extends their vocabulary by millions!! Students that enter Kindergarten without being read to at home are millions of words behind. My hope is that by providing high interest books that the children are excited to bring home to their families we can start to bridge that gap.

The money will be spent on the following title sets that include 5 or more books in each set. The titles will be purchased from AKJ Education for $459.17.
