Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation hasn't added a story.

Local organizations are decorating pumpkins to transform the entryway of the Cancer Centre into a Halloween spectacular. You can support your favourite pumpkin by donating today!

 

For as long as she can remember, Lindsey Bareich, now a first year student at the University of Waterloo , has loved carving pumpkins. Back when she was just 12 years old, Lindsey’s father challenged her to find a way to turn her favourite fall hobby into a meaningful way to give back to her community.

In 2018, Lindsey created Carve 4 Cancer, a unique fundraiser that also lifts the spirits of patients, families, and staff that visit the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre. Carve 4 Cancer encourages local businesses to sponsor the purchase of a locally sourced, gigantic (up to 80lbs!) pumpkin. Companies design beautiful, dynamic, and intricately carved pumpkin masterpieces. During the last week of October, the pumpkins can be found on display, transforming the Windsor Regional Cancer Centre entryway.

Sarah Lichtman, Admitting Clerk at the Cancer Centre, says patients love Carve 4 Cancer, and she can feel the excitement every October,  “I have had patients comment on how they didn’t want to come to treatment, but seeing all the pumpkins outside uplifted their spirits on bad days. ”

 

Donate $500 to the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation in exchange for a giant pumpkin and a chance to compete in the Best Pumpkin Contest.

The participating businesses carve, decorate, or paint their giant pumpkins, then deliver them to the Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation. The patients and staff of the Cancer Centre judge the pumpkins and vote for their favourite using a paper ballot system, and the general public can also cast their vote online via Facebook. The pumpkins with the most ballot votes or likes will be crowned the 2024 Best Pumpkin Contest winners!

 

TO PARTICIPATE

As this is our 7th anniversary event, we want it to be our best event yet! The goal is to raise $10,000 this year, and in doing so, reach a grand total of $75,000 raised over the past seven years of running Carve 4 Cancer!

Ways to Win:

Similar to last year, there will be four award categories:

1. Patient/Staff Vote: via in-person paper ballots

2. Company/Public Vote: via an online Facebook liking system (1 ‘like’ = 1 vote)

3. Judges’ Award: collective decision of a surprise local celebrity judge panel

4. Highest Fundraiser Award: every participant will receive a personal donation link to forward to friends and family. The participant with the most raised beyond their $500 entry fee wins!

How do I support my favourite pumpkin?

To support your favourite pumpkin, hit the "Donate" button. Under the section "Attribute your contribution", select the team who carved your favourite pumpkin!

 

What if I just want to donate to Carve 4 Cancer and not a specific pumpkin?

To support the initiative as a whole, simply select the "Donate" button on the main page and do not select "attribute your contribution". 

 

Can I see the pumpkins in person?

Yes! The pumpkins will be located outside the entrance to the Cancer Center located at 2220 Kildare Road (off of Alsace Avenue). 

 

What's the link to vote for the pumpkins?

What are the pumpkin award categories?
