Camp Achieve provides children with grade-appropriate academic experiences led by the teachers from their own schools in the form of summer camp which runs a total of nine weeks. This multi-week program is divided into three sessions. Students will have the choice to attend one, two, or all three sessions. Each day of camp will includes literacy, math, arts and crafts, nature and physical activity. Other optional courses provided through community partnerships with businesses and volunteers round out the students' days. All participants are provided nutritional support in the form of healthy snacks and/or lunch each day. Individual assessment of students' progress is a critical component to providing targeted individualized educational content.
Direct small group academic instruction is provided by trained, certified teachers who are generally from the participating schools themselves and who are identified as the most skilled for building relationships and teaching all types of learners. By using the schools' own teachers, Camp Achieve provides an opportunity to build and cement relationships between the teachers and students, parents, and siblings. For incoming Kindergartners, this means that start of the school year goes much more smoothly, students are comfortable more quickly and get down to learning content earlier in the school year. For older students, they see that the teachers are there for them, care about their success, and they can get to know their next years' teachers in advance.
It has been important to the principals of participating schools that the program not be known as "for the underperforming kids" or "for the kids that need it." The first nine schools involved have had a majority of students who are low-income, but also a segment of students whose families have been able to pay to participate. This has created an equalized playing field of participants within the school. All families have been eager to participate. This scale-up project will explore the addition of schools that reside "on the cusp" of Title I status.

Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom, summer and after-school programs.
In the event that this project does not reach its goal, BEF may apply the funds received to another project in need.
