Lucky Dog Rescue, Inc hasn't added a story.
On October 29, a resident in far north Phoenix was in her front yard when she saw a cocker spaniel wandering down her street in distress. The dog, covered in blood, seemed to be disoriented and exhausted. The woman took the dog into her garage, set up an area for her to relax, gave her food and water, and quickly started posting on social media for help. One of our LDR volunteers and the founder of our affiliated program, HARTT (Humane Animal Rescue and Trapping Team) saw the posts for help and immediately responded. She drove to the woman’s home and, after taking a look at the condition the poor dog was in, she rushed her to the closest open emergency veterinary hospital. Given that the dog was covered in blood and smelled like rotting flesh, the first assumption was that she had been attacked by a wild animal.
Upon examination by the veterinarian, however, all of her problems stemmed from actual chronic neglect. Her conditions and initial diagnoses included:
- Severely infected ears (both sides) such that both ear canals had calcified shut and were filled with infection
- A ruptured tumor (likely benign, but still to be determined) on her cheek
- Rotting teeth
- Anemia - virtually nonexistent blood platelets
The veterinarian quickly cleaned her up as best as possible, and she received immediate medication for her conditions. Given her severe anemia, she could not withstand surgery. Subsequently, at a follow-up veterinary appointment, she was also diagnosed with Valley Fever.
Bailey is in a loving foster home at the moment, but her medical needs are significant. Through it all, she is the most sweet, loving dog – she wants nothing more than to sit with her people and to be comforted. She is on pain medications, antibiotics, an anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal (for the Valley Fever) but she is uncomfortable all the time. She’s painful and itchy and has to wear an e-collar or she will scratch her ears and her face bloody.
Bailey is starting the first of her complex veterinary procedures this week, now that her platelets are in the normal range. She will have the facial tumor removed, and she will have a complete dental – she will likely need to have many of her teeth extracted. Once her other medications run their course, the veterinarian will decide the next course of treatment, which could include a total ear canal ablation surgery.
This poor girl has been through so much, and her care thus far with diagnostics and basic medications alone are in excess of $1,000. Her additional procedures are anticipated to cost upwards of $3,000, perhaps as high as $4,500 if the complex ear surgery is indicated. This dog has SO much love and life left in her – she deserves to be comfortable for the first time in what is likely years and move on to experiencing a happy and pain-free life. Please help us to help her – any amount helps. We are so grateful for your support!
Here are pictures of what Bailey looked like when she first came to us and what she looks like now. She was groomed a bit and is now awaiting surgery for the removal of her ear canals and the tumor.
