Beaverton T1D Student Union hasn't added a story.
We are excited to announce the creation of the
Beaverton Type 1 Diabetes Student Union
(or
Beaverton T1D Student Union, for short). The
goal of this group is to provide a community of support, resources,
and connection for students living with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and
their families, as well as spread awareness throughout our schools,
our district and the community. We have put together a team with
teacher, student, and community representatives that each have
personal experiences with T1D, to ensure a safe and fun experience
for all involved.
We have a student representative helping us plan all of the
work we are doing right now, and then this group will hopefully lead
to lots of leadership opportunities for students of all ages
throughout the group. We have plans to present at assemblies in all
school and activities for national diabetes month and/or World
Diabetes Day. We have talked about having meaningful transitions and
supports for students as they enter elementary, middle and high
school. Another thing we have discussed is potentially creating
teams for diabetes events like JDRF events or other events
supporting organizations/people with type 1 diabetes, which would
provide students opportunities to help lead teams and promote events
at their schools.
While the daily challenges of T1D often leave youth with T1D
feeling isolated and stressed, we have found that community
connections with others living with T1D allows youth to develop a
positive outlook on life with T1D and provides a positive outlet of
compassion and understanding.
The money we are asking for is going to t-shirts and
drawstring bags with the logo for all students, plus we were hoping to
use the funds for shirts for the adult mentors/supervisors throughout
the district, including all nurses and nurses assistants. There are 98
students with type 1 diabetes, 21 nurses and assistants, and then a
few other adults that are already involved, and we have a company that
would do shirts for $5 each, so about 125 shirts at $5 for a total of
$625. The drawstring bags we have found are $1.15 each, so we would
order 100 (or maybe a few more) of those for all students for a total
of $115. We also would like to buy some snacks that are great for
treating low blood sugars, which would be great for students in CDL or
in person. We also have some other ideas for activities with the group
that may require some extra funds, and we’d really like to be able to
do all of this without asking our students/families for money to
support the group.
We would appreciate your support of these students by helping
purchase shirts and bags, plus some low blood sugar treatment
options for these incredibly resilient students. Thank you for your support!
