Barnes Elementary School hasn't added a story.
UPDATE 5/25/22
The response and support for our campaign has
been incredible! We are so appreciative of everyone who has
contributed and shared this project that enables us to get a tshirt to
every student and unite our school in our end of year Field Day! We
are almost there and would like to do something extra special -
if we can raise just $475 more to get the extra soft shirts
for our students. They'll be comfy for years to come. $5,
$10, or even $15 all adds up to helping us reach our goal! Thank you
all for the support of our Barnes Bobcats!
_______________
The much anticipated, Barnes Elementary
end-of-year Field Day is returning after a two-year hiatus. We want to
gift each of our vibrant students and dedicated staff with a field day
t-shirt, at no cost to them. Our students have never received
a free, school shirt before and we plan to change that.
For our Barnes community, Field Day is not merely a day of contest or competition, rather it is a day of celebration. Celebration of thriving amidst unequal foundations and abundant impediments. Celebration of educational achievements, in and out of the classroom. Celebration of health and commitment to caring for one's self. Celebration of being here, together. Celebration of doing good and doing well.
Having t-shirts to gift our students, further instills in them
that unity is important, that teamwork creates community, and that
they are irrevocably worth the effort of making, and getting, these
shirts.
And they are.
Our students are bright, beautiful humans that are learning each day, both academically and interpersonally. We want to instill a sense of pride in their community, in the school that we call family. Shirts, that are matching, unified and free, will unequivocally enhance this feeling of belonging and worthiness.
Our fifth graders have been begging for a Field Day and Jog-A-Thon for months, trying to regain some of the traditions and cultures that they had missed the last two years, before they leave our school. Students are yearning and pining for the opportunity to just be. To be the youthful, playful, children that they are.
Practically speaking, Field Day is a day filled with physical
activity, team games and a safe, yet unrestricted, environment that
fuels easy conversation and laughter amongst students, peers and
staff. After nearly two years of staring at a computer screen,
predominantly while sitting for hours on end, students (and staff
alike) have the innate desire to move. Furthermore, Field Day is about
meaningful play where students get to be kids once again, without
being told to sit down or to be quiet. Creativity is essential to
healthy growth in children, and free play and organized games
contribute to that.
During this past year of resumed in-person teaching, we have been highly vigilant to the social and emotional well being of our students. For many, the pandemic put an even larger barrier in their social and emotional growth. Fifth graders spent primary growing years online, third graders have not been in school since kindergarten, second graders may have never stepped foot in school until this year and kindergarteners have spent very little time socializing with other adults or kids, outside of their family or close circles.
Barnes is a very unique and special community; our slogan is Somos Familia, we are family. We take pride in the community in and around Barnes, and the diversity therein (including 18 different languages spoken, and a predominantly Hispanic/Latinx student population). Barnes is a fully dual language school, teaching students in Spanish and English, and is also the oldest continuously operated school in the district. We prioritize students first, through an equitable and inclusive mindset, empowering them to do good and do well.
We would be immensely grateful and honored to gain your support in funding shirts for our school community. Further, I know that our students will be inspired and encouraged by your partnership and belief in them, and their futures. The impact from these shirts will be invaluable to our students and community.
Our deepest gratitude for your consideration and time!
Somos Familia, we are family.
