ISC MUSIC MATTERS hasn't added a story.
Hello! My name is Casey Albelo and I teach elementary music at Beaver Acres Elementary School. I serve students in grades K-5, but I also have a very special group of students who need extra help and resources. These students are limited in their cognitive abilities, speech development, locomotor movements and stimulus control. They are served together in a classroom setting and come to music once every 3 days.
The money raised will allow me to buy instruments made specifically for this population of special needs students. Regular classroom instruments are too big or too small, too difficult to hold in the hand, and have many other limitations. I would like to buy instruments that are sturdy and specifically made with handles or other attributes to make it easier for the students to make music.
Especially in this time of remote learning, if we can get instruments into the hands of these special students, we can continue to reach them through music.
These students are AMAZING and they love music. Music reaches them in a way other mediums/subjects cannot. Those who are non-verbal will often hum with the music, or even sing phrases from some of the songs! We practice locomotor movement with songs that have us pretending to be dinosaurs, bumble bees, ponies, and goldfish. Students who usually don't get up from their chairs will dance and wiggle to the "Monster Boogie". The students love the instruments the most. It is absolutely thrilling to see a child's eyes light up when they can pat the drum. Often students put their ears or body right on the instrument to feel its vibration. We shake bells and maracas, play tubular instruments called Boomwhackers, and explore many others. Students in music class learn to take turns, participate with their classmates, make music together and individually, and smile a lot.
I have seen students in a single school year go from refusing to play an instrument to jumping up when it is their turn to play. I have seen children who roamed around the room now sit down to sing and play and listen with their classmates. I have heard students sing who I have never heard another sound come out of their mouth. It is a privilege to be able to teach these students and see the huge growth they experience through music.
My goal is to raise $1100 to buy instruments and books/music that is appropriate for these students and will help them to be even more successful in music. Music brings us together in a way that nothing else can. These children know that better than many of us. Please consider helping me and 27 incredible young people.
