Time management is a skill that can be challenging to learn, especially as a young kid. But with the right tools, there can be systems in place that help support success. This skill is especially challenging for some of our students who are young and in charge of getting themselves ready each morning. There are a few students at our school who manage their time on their own to get ready for school, including making sure they get to the bus stop on time. It has been proven challenge when there is no alarm clock at home, students are unsure how long they have, and there are aspects of anxiety because of the immense responsibilities.
I am writing this project in hopes to support these families with some systems that will provide success. Alarm clocks are needed to wake up. Timers will be used to help with transitions to various activities and teach various lengths of time while at school. and calming tools will be used to aid students when anxiety arises. Calm strips are stickers that are textured that help students feel grounded as they practice breathing and positive affirmations. I also hope to order a pack of calming, tactile tools to allow students to use them at home and at school.
Our team has no means to obtain these materials to support kiddos who struggle the most with attendance. We all know that attendance is the first step towards growth for our kiddos. If we can change the narrative of these students while they are young (allowing them to attend school regularly on time), it will greatly impact them as they grow older. Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom projects, summer and after-school programs.
