Adonais Mercy House hasn't added a story.
My name is Shane Wallenda and three years ago we were introduced to some children in the Philippines with cancer, needless to say our hearts broke for these precious children, it is hard when dealing with children who are impoverished but when these same impoverished children are terminally ill with cancer, it is as though God himself slaps you across the face and says wake up.
We started small, not knowing what to do, so we thought perhaps throwing a Christmas party for these children and their families would be a great way to help keep their minds off of their tragic circumstances, even if only for a little while.
So we started what has become known as “Christmas with Cancer” where we get together with friends and family and purchase gifts and food and raise money for medicine and then throw a big Christmas party for them and their families.
Our first few Christmases we supported 22 children and their families, I don’t know if it was my ignorance or just the gracious hearts of the people we were giving to but somewhere along the lines we were able to sit down and talk with a mother who had just lost her 5 yo son to Cancer where she opened our eyes to a deeper understanding of the massive need of these children and their families.
While the Christmas party was nice and the kids loved it and it brought so much happiness to these little Angels, the tragic reality was that come the next day when some of these children were back in the Hospital was when the real need was.
Because of the extreme poverty for most of these families, these children have less than a 20% chance of Survival, the parents cannot afford treatment and unlike in the United States there is no such thing as insurance covering it, they must pay in advance for needs like blood transfusions, which can extend a child’s life by month’s even years. They do not receive treatment and get billed for it, unfortunately because of the lack of support the hospital requires payment or the families must wait in line for what little the government provides.
For some of these families when their child is extremely sick and they need blood or platelet transfusions or are I need of other medical procedures, they family not having funds to pay for treatment wait until the last possible second and then once they get into the hospital they have a 3 to 5 day waiting period for a Government handout that will cover the cost of treatments, it is during this waiting period many of these families do not have the ability to even provide food for their child as they wait in the corridors of the hospital since there are not enough beds to go around.
Imagine a sick child without any food waiting on a cold floor of a hospital hallway for days to try and get help. Now imagine the cost of a blood transfusion for one of these children costs 25 dollars, and the cost of food for a day while they wait is 10 dollars.
I don’t know about you, but I had to do something.
So we decided to start Adonai’s Mercy House, a Non-Profit Organization with the desire to make a difference for these children and their families. We provide food, clean water, and money for blood transfusions, platelet transfusions, and transportation for these families to the Hospital in emergency cases, and we also provide end of life care for these children and their families.
We are not unaware that many of the children we support will not live over 5 years, but the more we can do to help provide these medical needs along with food we can give these families and children the greatest need of all, more time.
Currently 100% of all donations goes directly to these children and their families, we have built up a pool of volunteers over the years that give their time and energy to see that our goal of helping these children is all we do.
Myself and my wife pay the cost out of pocket to get the money transferred to the hospital for payment, or the boxes of medicine and toys or canned goods. We do not go thru any third party, we pay the hospital directly for the treatment that is needed. We also provide food thru the same mother I mentioned earlier, she has joined us in this cause and has become our “Boots on the Ground” she gets the food cooked, and delivers it directly to the families in the hospital.
Because we work directly with the hospital and volunteers to accomplish these tasks you can be sure that everything, 100% and I mean all of it will get to the families that need it. I understand someday there may be overhead but as of now and in the foreseeable future, we pay for anything else.
The need is great and I wish I had the means to do it myself but I don’t, and while we currently are helping as many children as we can there are still about 1700 waiting to get help, that’s 1700 children who while they are in the hospital could use food and help for blood transfusions, help with transportation and other needs.
While it seems overwhelming that fact that we can help even one child continue life even for a little while makes it all worth it, that’s more time with their families, more time to experience hope, and more time to love. With your help we can do so much more.
