Abernethy Elementary PTA hasn't added a story.
Dear Abernethy Families and Friends,
Abernethy community, we are so close! Both to the end of the school year and to reaching our shared goal to fund 2.75 teaching and support staff positions for the upcoming school year.
We know you’ve already dug deep, and we are beyond grateful and awed by our generous community. With just $14,000 left to raise, we need you to help us get us over the finish line.
This money will go directly to support the position that is currently held by our valued reading specialist, Julie Miller, who works with so many of your children, to ensure that they are reading at or above grade level. We know so many families whose lives have been touched by instructional support specialists, and we want to make certain that we can keep this critical staff at Abernethy full time next year. Even if your kids don’t see a reading specialist, they make a difference for all students. When kids who need extra support are pulled out of classrooms for personalized learning, teachers are able to bring even more focus to the rest of their class.
One incredibly generous Abernethy family has stepped up to offer a matching grant of $5,000 toward our $14,000 goal. That means that one final push for $9,000 by the rest of us will get us to our goal.
Remember that many employers – big ones like Nike and Intel, but smaller ones too – will match employee charitable donations. Please consider asking if your employer offers donation matching!
As soon as we hit our $14,000 target, we’re done, full stop, no more solicitations.
We do not come to this special ask lightly or easily. People already given generously this year, raising enough to fund 1.5 classroom teachers, a half-time instructional support position and to bring our beloved librarian to full-time. This generosity came as the district cut Abernethy’s staffing level by 2.5 positions, under a new formula for allocating staff.
We also recognize that there are different beliefs within our parent community on the very act of fund-raising. Raising money for Abernethy staff specifically creates advantages for students of our school that are not available to all public-school students.
Please note that to fund staff at Abernethy we are required, per district policy, to contribute 30 percent of all funds raised to an equity pool that is distributed to less-privileged schools; even so, we are able to provide significantly more for our students than other schools throughout the district.
All voices have been important in these discussions as our community wrestles with our own path forward. We encourage you to add your own voice to the ongoing conversations at future community meetings.
While we participate today in this special ask, it is imperative that our community simultaneously commit to advocating for more equitable and stable public school funding on the statewide level. Together, we must call for a system where all public school receive what they need to meet students’ needs.
With a commitment to join us in creating a more sustainable system for the long term, we ask that we join together today to help our students immediately. If every family at Abernethy were able to give just $18 per student , our goal would be reached. So please, consider giving to the Abernethy PTA one more time this school year to secure the future for our kids.
Sincerely,
Lisa Delaney and Kirsten Isaacson
Abernethy PTA Co-Presidents
