My name is Elena Chiovaro and I am the coach for Aloha's National Art Honor's Society. Our students have been working hard to design a mural to spread art and love through our school. Your contribution will help us purchase:

$150 for wood, brushes and sandpaper
$50 for mounting equipment
$100 for paint.

Mission: National Art Honor Society would like to propose a Unity Mural that inspires students to come together. The mural will add identity to the school and show our values. Unity is something that has become an important part of Aloha and it is something that brings about a positive force. Ultimately, the mural will reflect Aloha and its diverse student body.

The Mural: The NAHS Unity Mural features the alphabetical letters U N I T Y with the ASL same letters in front.  Each hand will feature the work of a different artist throughout history, with special ties to the core idea of unity.

The Hands:

U: This hand features Keith Haring art style. He identified as a gay man and died from complications of Aids. His art in a whole was about love, accepting others and equality.

N: This hand is a take on Van Gogh’s Starry Night, where the colors have been replaced by a tapestry of LGBT flags. Van Gogh suffered from debilitating depression and anxiety, yet his work was filled with a joy and vision of a beautiful world.  

I: This hand features the artwork of Faith Ringgold and traditional African textile arts. Faith Ringgold is an African-American textile artist, whose work confronts prejudice by reimagining stereotypes and crafting portrayals of strong women.

T: This hand features  Katsushika Hokusai and other Ukiyo-e woodblock artists. Ukiyo-e prints marked a transition in Japanese culture for art to be available to everyone, no matter their class. Furthermore, Hokusai did not begin this, his most well known work, until he was into his 70s, enforcing the notion that it is never too late to begin an endeavor.

Y: This hand features Frida Kahlo’s art style, specifically her incorporation of Mexican culture and surrealism. She was an openly bisexual woman who faced many hardships but she always advocated self-love, empowerment, and being who you are.
