Aloha High School, College-Bound Warriors hasn't added a story.
We hope to motivate at least 275 seniors!
Project Info:
Each November the College and Career Center at Aloha High School kicks off the month with a College Application Week. It is a week filled with events such as FAFSA tutorials, instant college admissions, and application workshops. To incentivize the FAFSA (and the ORSAA--the Oregon Resident Student Aid Application-- intended for undocumented students), the past two years we have given students a free "College Bound Warrior" shirt as long as they've completed the FAFSA/ORSAA and one college application. Our College & Career Specialist designs the shirts so that each graduating class has their own unique design to show off to their peers and family.
We would love to be able to continue to offer these shirts as rewards to seniors who are keeping all of their postsecondary options open and we need YOUR help to fund them. The shirts also improve our school's college-going culture and help the younger students to see themselves as future college-bound Warriors.
Some comments about the shirts from seniors in the Class of 2018:
"I loved [the shirts]! It makes me feel happy and proud of
myself when I wear it." -C.A.
"The college shirt was a wake-up call that I would be graduating and going to college soon." -N.A.
"I liked the shirts. They felt like a physical validation of my hard work throughout high school." -D.B.

Educational Impact:
Aloha High School is the most racially and economically diverse high school in the Beaverton School District. Many of our students will be first generation college students who need a little extra support during the college application and financial aid processes. Since we know that finances continue to be one of the biggest barriers it is important that we as educators encourage all students to complete the FAFSA/ORSAA so that they can see the many postsecondary options that are available to them. Many families, especially those with parents who did not attend college, might not have the knowledge to navigate the intricate financial aid process. Others, even with educated parents, might not understand the value that comes from completing the FAFSA/ORSAA form and therefore continue to face financial barriers that could be knocked down by completing the form.
As a first generation college graduate and the College & Career Counselor at Aloha, I see these barriers play out in live time for seniors. Many will get started on the form but become disenfranchised by the language or the types of questions on the form and give up before reaching the end. Others don't even get started on the form because they know that the cost of college is astronomically high (average annual cost of tuition in 2017-18 for a public university in the U.S. was $9,970)* so they don't even bother filling out college applications or financial aid. In reality, most of these students are the ones that are going to qualify for the most amount of need-based aid so it is crucial that us educators show them the value in this complicated process and help them through it.
The outcomes of this project will be assessed at the end of the year by looking at Aloha's FAFSA completion rate and data around seniors who self-identify that they are attending a two- or four-year college. 73% of seniors in 2018 submitted the FAFSA so we are striving to boost this percentage to 80% for the class of 2019. For confidentiality and safety reasons we are unable to track ORSAA data.
