Aloha Huber Park is a Title 1 Kindergarten-8th grade school with a dual immersion Spanish and English program. Our average enrollment is over 900 students, approximately 77% of whom live in a low income family situation.  Students at AHP work hard every day to learn and grow. Our school library would like to support their efforts, as we work to encourage a love of reading that will last a lifetime. 

Unfortunately, a recent review showed just 8% of books in our Early Reader section are in Spanish. The Chapter Books section lacks options as well. Books written in Spanish have a yellow label on the spine and a look at our project picture will show few books with a yellow label. It is also very important to offer students enriching nonfiction reading experiences, which has significant room for improvement in our collection.  Our average nonfiction book is 18 years old. 

We would love to be able to offer students the opportunity to choose from a variety of engaging books written in Spanish in order to support personal choice reading for enjoyment, as well as to coordinate with the work being done in their classrooms.

With the money raised, we will purchase books written in Spanish for our school library, focusing on the reading interests and needs of our young readers in both fiction and nonfiction. We will promote the books in the library and share them with their teachers so that teachers know the books are available for students and for work in class. We hope our students will enjoy reading these books, share them with their classmates and families, and then return for more as they learn to love reading now and throughout their future.
