Amanda Rhode hasn't added a story.
More than 10% of the one million people living in Wake County live in poverty. Of those, 1 in 4 are children.
It's nearly impossible for a parent working full-time making minimum wage to support even one child — let alone two or three — without falling into poverty.
Families working and living below the poverty line — the "working poor" — struggle to make ends meet as-is. So when a situation goes from bad to worse — such as having a spouse leave, experiencing a long-term illness, losing a job, or even having a car break down — good, hard-working people are sent into a full-blown financial crisis.
Living paycheck-to-paycheck, these families often lack any extra resources or savings to cover unexpected expenses, which means rent, utility, and other bills go unpaid. Eviction notices start coming in which lead to a total downward spiral of unfortunate circumstances.
I work closely with many of the children and families in need through an after-school literacy program where I tutor children each week. I see how hard these parents work — often working two or more jobs to keep the lights on — and how often they come up short regardless.
I also see how much they go without, including food, clothing, and basic necessities like toilet paper, bath soap, toothpaste, laundry detergent, and more.
This is where I plan to step in and help make a difference and where you can help! Working with A Doorway to Hope, a local charity in Cary, NC, I'm working to build kits containing basic household items for our neighbors in need.
A Doorway to Hope works closely with families in our community to help working, low-income families experiencing financial and/or life crises and who need a helping hand.
They don't subsidize income, but rather provide the necessary resources and help to give temporary, emergency help to assist families as they return to economic and personal self-sufficiency.
Part of the temporary assistance they offer families in need are
"
Essentials Baskets" consisting of basic
household items, such as personal and dental hygiene products, health
and first-aid kits, household cleaning products, and paper products
like toilet paper and paper towels.
My goal is to put together 25 "Essentials Baskets" in time for Thanksgiving — which a big ask since placing quality products in each basket costs near $80.
I hope you can give as little or as much as you can because every little bit helps. At the very least, please consider sharing a link to this page via your social media channels.
With your help, I think we can make a huge difference in the lives of 25 families in need — in an effort to deliver a sense of normalcy to their everyday lives and give the gift of hope.
