ACMA Robotics hasn't added a story.
This project is helping fund ACMA Robotics, First Tech Challenge team 14939. We are currently a group of 8 middle schoolers (with a coach) at ACMA who like to code and engineer but hope to grow the team up to 15 students from both the middle school and high school level. The 2021-2022 season will be our rookie season and we are all very excited to start the next school year with robotics.
The start-up cost to form a First Tech Challenge team is about $3000 to $5000. The initial kit of parts, communications and electronics kit will run around $1200. There is also national registration and local competition fees around $500. We will need money for a few power tools, and to also build our practice playing field which will run about $800. Plus we could also benefit from being able to buy extra, more specialized robotics parts with any extra funds we are able to raise as the kit of parts will keep our build very limited.
We hope to build and grow this team year after year. Having older students become mentors for the younger students as the program progresses. The season kick-off celebration is September 20th, 2021. We are focusing on fundraising over the summer and growing the team of interested students until kick-off. Then all the fun of building robots and playing in league matches starts and continues until early January 2022. Culminating in our league championship towards the end of January 2022 with the hope of making it to the super qualifiers, state and maybe even the world championship.
ACMA is a school more focused on the arts, but there are students who also want to be involved in all of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math). This program will allow these students to pursue their interests in science and technology while also allowing students the opportunity to design and be creative. This program will help prepare students for life after high school by giving them skills to be college and career ready. FIRST is a nationally recognized robotics program, highly valued by tech driven companies and engineering schools. There are millions of dollars in scholarship money only available to students who have participated on a FIRST team.
According to the FIRST website, "FIRST Tech Challenge students learn to think like engineers. Teams design, build, and code robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built from a reusable platform, powered by Android technology, and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming." This multi-faceted program includes a business, fundraising and outreach aspect as well as all the coding and engineering. It is a perfect addition to ACMA because it is a robotics program for middle through high school and we are a 6th-12th grade school.
