Greenway Elementary hasn't added a story.
Our History:
Four years ago a discussion began at Arts & Communication Magnet Academy wondering how our school could give back to the Beaverton community. Seeing as how all of our students are artists, we began with just that—ART! We challenged our National Honor Society and our National Art Honor Society to come up with a plan. With the help of the NHS advisor, Jill Starling, ACMA Art Day was born.
Our first event was so successful we decided to do two Art Days in the next two years, reaching out to four schools per year. We stayed with our two neighborhood schools, but then invited two new schools per year on a first come, first serve basis. The theme varied and the activities supported the orchestra’s chosen music. In our fourth year, we invited different elementary schools to come but found that many could not afford the buses. And hence, Art Day On-The-Go was born.
In 2016-17, we piloted a program of Art Day On-The-Go. We connected with McKay Elementary School who was very receptive to us coming for about three hours. We also found that ACMA’s Student Government wanted to participate so ACMA now had the interest and engagement of three leadership groups—NHS, NAHS, and Student Government. In the three third grade classrooms at McKay, we continued with visual arts (Masks), writing (Cross Sticks) and Theatre (movement and enunciation). The day culminated with all of the third graders learning the dance and performing for teachers and other students. We brought the entire orchestra, photographers, and videographers to complete all of our art pathways.
For the first three years, National Honor Society has earned the money to fund Art Day. The students have sold pizza at lunch twice a week. However, at this point, most of the NHS bank account has been depleted. In order to continue this activity, we are looking for some additional financial assistance. We need two buses to take all students, musical instruments and supplies to the elementary school. We need to purchase art supplies and CDs for the videos. Ideally, we would also love to have funds to pay a stipend for a staff member to organize the events with students and substitute for the orchestra teacher.
See below for the cost of one visit:
- Buses: 4 hours at $42/hour per school $ 168
- Supplies: Art supplies, cross sticks $732
- CD’s (sent home with each student) $100
- Stipend and substitute/event $ 500
