Hi, I am Levy. I am 23 year old CKD Patient, undergoing Hemodialysis. I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease when I was 20. Back then, I was a graduating college student. Before we found out that I have Kidney Failure, I went to school every day ignoring headaches, palpitation, water retention and the other symptoms.
At first, we thought that I had anemia because I looked pale. We even suspected that it is due to the lack of sleep and stress from our thesis. Then the symptoms became worst, so my Mom brought me to the doctor and we found out that my hemoglobin is low. The doctor then advised me to inject epoetin alpha thrice a week to regain my hemoglobin. We did a few tests to determine why my hemoglobin is rapidly dropping down. Then the truth was revealed, based on the laboratories my creatinine level is too high and isn’t normal.
Without hesitation my family rushed me in to a Kidney Specialist at National Kidney Transplant Institute (NKTI) to clarify things and for a few more checkups and laboratories. The result of my laboratory tests and Kidney Ultrasound shows that I have End Stage Renal Disease Secondary to Chronic Glumerulonephritis (CGN). The doctor told my family that I have two options to live: Kidney Transplant or Dialysis (can be peritoneal or hemodialysis).
Hearing those words shattered me into pieces. It felt like I lost my dreams and my future. We also visited other hospitals for second opinion but unfortunately they all advised the same. All hopes were crashed down and I broke down into tears, then.
Back then, I knew how hurt my mom was because my father died with the same illness when I was 3 years old, and my brother was 2. My relatives didn’t want me to undergo dialysis because it is a continuous process that needed a lot of money. My father also undergone hemodialysis but my family failed to continuously sustain it. My mother raised us alone. She worked as a dressmaker. She also did part-time jobs, such as selling meriendas, being an Avon reseller, and more, to suffice our needs and to send me to hospital.
Now, I am still undergoing hemodialysis at San Pascual Hemodialysis Center at Paombong, Bulacan. Somehow, I also managed to graduate and finish my studies. I badly wanted to live a normal life again. That’s why I am doing my best and using whatever talent that was given to me to earn money for my Kidney Transplant. I believe that I must help myself first before others help me out, so please buy our shirts, donate and help save a life. God bless everyone.
