A close friend of the Iowa City Catholic Worker named Dimas De Coss Hernandez is in ICE custody in Polk County - and we are raising money to help him and his family.

Dimas is a devoted husband and father of four children. He is the primary breadwinner for his family and has worked two full-time jobs, 80 hours a week, for the last 15 years to provide for them. Dimas' oldest daughter, Ivanna, is a DREAMer, and she will also be at risk for deportation if the U.S. Congress does not pass legal protections by March 6 for her and 800,000 other undocumented children.

Legal expenses to fight his deportation could will cost at least $15,000. His family has scraped together every penny they have and have already spent $7,500 to free Dimas so he can get back to work and fight his deportation.

We are asking you to chip in to our "Justice for Dimas" campaign with a generous gift to help him and his family. We want to match the $7,500 they have raised in order to give Dimas the best legal defense in Iowa. Call it a preferential option for the poor.

We know that what is happening to Dimas is an injustice facing millions of other undocumented immigrant families. As people of faith and good conscience, we are called to accompany our community members and neighbors facing deportation. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops teaches us that "people have the right to migrate to sustain their lives and the lives of their families," and that "countries must regulate their borders with justice and mercy." Catholic Social Teaching makes it clear that immigration status should not be a prerequisite for food, shelter, clothing, education, or health care.

Will you help us take a stand against immoral and unjust deportations by contributing to Dimas' legal defense fund?

We say ¡Ni Uno Más! / Not One More! Sanctuary Not Deportations!
