In South Africa, school-leavers need English to get good jobs. Amathole English Outreach will help non-mother tongue scholars to improve their English.

Rural children in the Amathole District, South Africa are forced to learn all their subjects in English even though they never come into contact with English outside of school. They have no experience speaking to mother tongue English speakers.

I am Nita Coetzee, an experienced teacher and tutor. I have a TEFL/ TESOL certificate, a Bachelor of Arts (English Literature and Fine Art) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Art and English Second Language) Rhodes University, South Africa.

I live in the Eastern Cape which is the poorest province in South Africa. 81% of learners in this province attend no-fees schools. These schools are under-resourced and classrooms are overcrowded.

I will run a pilot programme at Thoboshana Primary School until the end of the year. The programme will be aimed at grade 6 and 7 learners teaching them language production skills i.e. writing and speaking.

From 2018, I will extend the project to more schools. Thoboshana and Nkwezana Primary School near Sunrise-on-Sea have signed up for next year, already.

I need funding for the pilot project. Thanks to my generous donors so far I have textbooks and a printer. I still need to cover mileage, stationery and my teaching time. I am also applying for company registration as an NPO. The name has already been approved. I am hoping to receive regular funding from corporations in South Africa from next year. I am very excited about this project. Please help get it started. Thanks.
