The Ghana Health and Education Initiative (GHEI) works closely with communities to address the challenges of rural development. Its volunteer programs include Girls Empowerment, Children's Enrichment Camp, and Malaria Prevention.

"Malaria causes more deaths in children under 5 than any other disease in Ghana, yet many of these deaths are preventable. For the same group, sleeping under an insecticide treated bednet can reduce mortality from all causes by 15-30%. Malaria is also a major cause of illness among adults, putting economic strain on families that depend on farming and labor as their livelihood. Sleeping consistently under a bednet can substantially reduce malaria among the general population. However, for various reasons, bednet usage rates remain low."

I have recently been selected as a member of the 2015 Malaria Prevention session, during which I will partner with a team of local community health workers to evaluate bednet usage and collect basic health indicators for the communities of Humjibre, Soroano, and Kojina, around 6,000 people. As a part of my commitment to the program, I have been asked to raise money towards the program for room and board, transportation in between sample sites, and as a general program donation. I am asking for your help - I am also reaching out to my school (the University of Florida) and other scholarship avenues. Please help me get to Ghana!
