Help Annex Comic & the Annex Art Society grow into a community center for the Arts, connecting other Art Groups in the southern New England area. And help celebrate the 30th Anniversay or Annex Comics in Newport, Rhode Island!
A Very Brief History:
The Annex was opened as a second location to another store in Portsmouth, Rhode Island in 1984. The Annex, also known as Annex Comics, located at 314 Broadway in Newport specialized in current and old sports cards and comics. It quickly became a gathering place for the younger generation, a place to share a hobby with like-minded others. Fast forward a few years and I, Wayne Quackenbush, bought the company and quickly added other collectable lines such as card games and videos and branched into online auction sales.
When I bought the Annex I had about 20 years of retail experience mostly from running a chain of video stores in New York City. I had a bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from Pratt Institute. I read comics books when I was a kid. I’ve always loved the combination of visual and literary languages to tell a story so acquiring a comic book store just seemed natural.
Soon I decided to connect in a different way to the neighborhood. I put out a call for artists initially in 2008 and quickly filled the window galleries with colorful work from local creators. The galleries show one or two new artists per month, usually about twenty per year with few repeats. The gallery windows are viewed by hundreds of people per month, especially during the summer.
With this initial experiment begun, I quickly realized that when you support the Arts you support and connect the community.
A couple of years ago I co-founded, with a few friends, the Facebook group The Annex Art Society with, currently, almost 500 members that interact and share artwork from all over the world.
Early this year, due to my volunteer efforts connecting the Arts with the community I was voted in by the board of directors to the position of President of the Portsmouth Arts Guild Center for the Arts in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
Annex Comics and its online component is more than just me, the owner and co-founder, respectively, it is a group, a conglomerate of customers and creators, a special gathering of people, really an army of artists and writers sharing creativity.
What we have done:
--Mentor Students from the East Bay Met School, five years running, and the local Resource for Human Development group specializing in teaching job skills, drawing, creative writing, event organizing and computer skills. We realize the importance of the training of visionaries.
--Create, organize and maintain a monthly series of Art & Writing Challenges on Facebook using word prompts to inspire artists all over the world to various creative daily meditative acts.
--Teach Creative Drawing Classes at the Portsmouth Arts Guild in Portsmouth Rhode Island
--Organize Art, drawing and writing marathons in various locations in Rhode Island, including the Jamestown Center for the Arts, the Annex Comics store and the Portsmouth Arts Guild.
--Show local artists in the Annex gallery windows with an audience of thousands in Newport Rhode Islands
--Gathered and hung our first art show in another venue by taking over a local art gallery, the Deblois in Middletown, Rhode Island, for a month and showcased the work of 30 artists, many of whom have never shown their work in public before.
--Organized Psychic Fairs and Art Expos, connecting members of local psychic groups, Tarot readers, astrologers, herbalists and ghost hunters with visual artists and writers, including painters, alternative photographers and poets and the local community.
--Published four issues of ANNEX COMICS magazine utilizing words and pictures from artists in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York, California, Oregon and Washington State
Now it’s time for change. It’s time to grow.
A list of things to change and what’s ahead:
--Clear out and better utilize the interior space of the 314 Broadway store
--Refurbish the physical location at 314 Broadway, the brick and mortar home of Annex Comics, including new shelving and ceiling and floor cosmetic repairs.
--Create a more functional hanging system for the display of local artwork in the window galleries and inside the 314 Broadway store.
-- Get heat for the store in the middle of winter
--Publish more ANNEX COMICS magazines, collect the best of previous issues into book form and move into new publishing ventures such as single artist retrospectives, illustrated collections of stories and poetry
--Plan more Art Expos and Gallery shows at outside venues to gain more exposure for local artists…
--Acquire funds for legal fees for making FRIENDS OF ANNEX a non-profit, ensuring the endurance of a local tradition that’s lasted for 30 years and move forward with a creative vision to connect artists, artist groups and the local community
