Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
Rescue is a rollercoaster of heady wins and devastating losses. This weekend we have celebrated the miracle of being able to help Charli, but we also have a story to share of a little boy we raced to help, but his injuries were too extensive and we had to make the heartbreaking choice to let him go in the OR.
A plea had gone out from the shelter for a little boy who was in very bad shape after possible HBC (hit by car). His medical notes did not look promising - lethargic, not eating, not ambulatory, fearful, swollen anal area, probably tail fracture, no sensation on tail, multiple abdominal hematomas, bruises on inguinal area and around scrotum.
Our intake team debated on what to do....the list was long and complicated and he was so small. We didn't know what we would have on the back end, could we help him? Would he even survive? Could we fundraise to cover his care?
We looked at his sweet face and we rolled the dice and placed our hold. MDAS got him ready to travel complete with two heating bottles to keep him warm as his system was in shock and his body temperature low.
We named this sweet boy Benz and he became part of our DRSF family.
A medical transport was arranged and Benz made his way straight to LeadER and was immediately taken to be examined as they had the medical notes from the shelter and knew he needed immediate care.
Along with all the other conditions LeadER's Emergency Medical Team was struggling to wrap their heads around and trying to get him stabilized, it came to be known from a contrast test that Benz was leaking urine into his abdomen. His bladder was ruptured. He needed to go to surgery right then.
Dr. Horgan notified President Pam and little Benz went to the OR with Dr. Horgan and Dr. Z ready to do everything they could to help him. We held our breath as ruptured bladders are hard to come back from and after they got him open, a ruptured bladder was the least of Benz's issues.
Dr. Horgan placed a late night call to President Pam from the Operating Room to let her know what he and Dr. Z had found. Not only was Benz's bladder ruptured, his urethra was stretched/torn from how he was hit and his pelvis was broken with shards of bone all mixed in there. To get to where they needed to get to to even try to fix Benz's bladder and urethra, they would need to fracture Benz's pelvis in half to get to the area. There would be no guarantee he would make it through the procedure, if the procedure would even work, and what his quality of life would be on the back end if he did.
With tears in everyone's eyes, it was decided the kindest thing to do was let Benz go on the table.
The complicated ones we save stay with all of us forever and the ones that we can't are burned in the hearts of those who tried to help them.
Were was Benz' family? Why was he out on the streets? How does a 9LB little black and tan boy get hit and then someone drive away? If he had gotten medical care earlier could he have made it? How does it work that so many people fall in love with Charli and she can be helped and we have to let Benz go on the table before he can feel any love or even be introduced to our Community?
It is easy to drive ourselves crazy trying to make sense of it. But there is no sense to be made. All we can do is trust in that whoever is calling the shots (God, Allah, Buddha, Glittery Spirit Unicorns, etc) knows what they are doing and they will give us all enough wins to celebrate and keep us going and hopefully make the losses spaced out in such a way that we don't lose hope.
We can't remember another time that we have lost a little one before we even had a chance to tell their story, but the unfortunate reality is that even though we lost Benz we still have to cover his care. We welcome any donations toward offsetting those expenses which makes it possible for our War Chest to be ready to say yes to the next little one who urgently needs us.
We thank whoever it is that found Benz and brought him to the shelter, Dr. Horgan, Dr. Z and their emergency surgery team who put their hearts on the line every time they head into the OR, stand vigil as these heartbreaking decisions are made, and love our dogs as much as their own.
Even though he was with us a very short amount of time, Benz was, and will always be remembered as a DRSF dog and member of our Class of 2022. Tonight we pay him the highest honor we have to give, as this will be our last post of the night as our social media feeds go dark for the rest of the evening to remember and honor Benz.
We invite you to light a candle in his honor to light up our side of the bridge to let him know his life mattered and take some solace in how many doxies there had to have been to meet him at the bridge and show him around.
Run free sweet boy, free of pain and injury and know how hard we tried to help you. Until we have a chance to meet again....forever loved, forever remembered, forever DRSF.
