There is no reason for a doxie to be a stray on the streets and there most defiantly isn't any reason at all for a doxie to be a stray on the streets AND heartworm positive - and that is what happened to the little boy we have named Jesse.

Yesterday a call went out from the shelter for a stray, approximately 4 years old in need of rescue.  We saw his photo, a hold was placed, and the freedom ride was on the way to scoop him up from that shelter as quickly as possible!

Jesse's Freedom Ride took him to Everglades Animal Hospital where Dr. Wemen checked him out and bloodwork showed that Jesse is Heart Worm Positive which is fatal if untreated, can leave lasting issues if it is not caught in time, and heartbreakingly is 100% preventable with a pill that is just a few small dollars a month.

The good news is that Jesse is safe, the bad news is that now, instead of going on the fast track to a foster home and likely a forever home (as who wouldn't want to adopt this handsome boy????) he is now going to be subject to a few months of restricted activity and some shots and treatment that can be unconfortable, if not painful.  None of which is Jesse's fault and all of which could have been prevented.

We are committed to providing Jesse what he needs for his 2nd chance and need your help to do so!  Would you consider a donation of any size to help us cover the cost of Jesse's HW treatment so that we can continue to be there for the next little one we know will be right around the corner?
