Mike Jordhoy hasn't added a story.
Hey guys,
Mike “Jorts” Jordhoy here – new to Vancouver by way of Dallas, Texas (as well as Houston and Calgary). I’m someone that has been involved in charity for years and am a big proponent of giving back to your community, and ever since I moved to Vancouver I have looked for a charity that I can get involved with. In Dallas I was on the Board of Directors for ORIX Foundation, and through that was able to see the great works and impact of many charities and foundations in the DFW area. I’ve seen first-hand how much of a difference small local charities can make in their community, and that’s why I’m excited about working with Eastside Boxing Club.
The Cause
Eastside Boxing Club (ESB) is a not-for-profit gym that offers community outreach programs for at-risk youth and women that have been exposed to violence in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Partnering with several different community organizations and agencies, ESB has been able to introduce 67 at-risk youth and children to the sport of boxing in a supportive environment where they have access to nutritious food, medical assessments and one-on-one support from social workers.
All of this is financially possible through the fundraising efforts of the Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association (AFGBA). The AFGBA puts on events such as Restaurant Rumble, an annual fundraising event to help support ESB and their community initiatives.
Why Get Involved?
I’m a personal believer of giving a hand up instead of a hand out, and I love organizations that attempt to give people training of some kind and community support rather than just monetary assistance. Additionally, I feel like youths in at-risk areas are often the people most negatively affected by the rough patches life can throw at us, and they are also the group least equipped to be able to handle those rough patches. ESB is an organization that works with this vulnerable demographic and gets them off the street and into a healthy community that teaches them discipline and the value of hard work.
My Dallas friends can look at groups like Café Momentum and Youth With Faces (formerly Youth Village Resources) to see a similar organization in work, and see how much of an difference it can make. Organizations like ESB can have a major impact on at-risk youth at a very transitional period in their life – an impact that can cause positive life-long change. Isn’t that worth supporting?
My Goal
In order to be able to finish my training and compete in one of the Fight Night bouts, I need your help in raising funds. My goals are:
$500 by June 1st
$1,500 by July 6th
$2,000 by July 22nd
I am not guaranteed a fight on July 27th at Fight Night, but the only way I can get a shot is with your help. If you help donate to this great organization and help me keep training, I promise to work my ass off and do everything I can to give you an opportunity to see me get my butt kicked in the ring at Commodore Ballroom. Either way, the money will go to a great cause . . . which is really the point of this whole thing anyway!
Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2016
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise $2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
