The Hermitage No-Kill Cat Shelter & Sanctuary hasn't added a story.
What’s a Life Worth?
Every day at The Hermitage, we rescue as many feline lives as we can. These precious souls come from just about everywhere but many of them come from Pima Animal Control, where they are literally days or minutes from being euthanized because of an upper respiratory infection, a positive FeLV test or simply because they’ve been on the wait list too long. Last year The Hermitage took in over 700 felines and successfully adopted out over 590. Roughly 80-90% of our cats come from Pima Animal Control. It’s no secret that PACC receives large sums of money not just from donors, but from government funding as well. In fact, a $22 million bond proposal to extend funding to PACC will be presented to Pima County residents in November, 2014. The potential funds will be used to expand the shelter and operations.
Conversely, The Hermitage relies on private donations alone-we receive no government funding at all. Our sole Mission is predicated upon a “no-kill” philosophy, and regardless of funding, no feline is ever euthanized at The Hermitage because of special needs or because there is “no room at the Inn.” The sad truth, however, is that like many privately funded shelters, The Hermitage may have to cease operations.
We are closed to intakes and donations are at an all-time low. It’s monsoon season and the roof is leaking because it needs to be patched and seal coated. Our monthly electric bill is more than most people’s mortgage or entire household utility bills per month. There are currently four sick cats in our medical department and our medical bills just last week were over $10,000.
The hardest part about being involved in animal rescue is associating money with the life of an animal. And so today I ask you to ponder the question, “What’s a Life Worth?”
What would you do if your precious little kitten or cat got lost and was maliciously abused by a group of cruel kids? Tossed around from person to person while one young boy poured soda all over him? What would you do if your best feline companion was hit by a car, lying sprawled in the gravel in 102 degree Tucson heat? A one-year-old kitty so dazed and in pain, not knowing whether he is going to live or die. I’m sure you’d hope that some kind and caring person would come to their rescue. I’m also sure you’d hope there was a safe and loving place for these scared and injured babies to be cared for until they could find a forever home.
Friend, I want you to know that these are true examples of what happened recently to “Crush” and “Stache,” two of our most recent intakes at The Hermitage.
“Crush,” a five-week-old orange tabby kitten, was named after the orange soda that the heartless boys were pouring over him.
Thankfully, a woman who saw the boys tormenting the defenseless kitten gave them a few dollars in exchange for Crush. She brought him directly to The Hermitage, where he was cleaned up, examined, treated for dehydration, fed, and loved by the entire staff.
“Stache,” aptly named for his beautiful white mustache, was found injured on the roadside by a compassionate passerby. As Stache lay dazed and in pain, this kind man stopped on his way to work and called a friend to come stay at the kitty’s side until he exchanged his motorcycle for a car and took Stache to be treated for his injuries.
Upon examination, it was discovered that Stache had two broken legs, a fractured pelvis, and enough damage to his tail to require amputation. Abandoned, with no owner and no hope for anyone to pay for his surgery, Stache quickly became a “Hermitage Cat” where he will be loved and nurtured until he finds a forever home.
Until Crush and Stache are adopted, they and so many other Hermitage residents will require medical attention, food, and shelter. With a critical lack in donations, however, the question remains on my mind… “What’s a Life Worth?”
These tiny, precious lives are worth everything to us. It’s the reason we show up every day and get our hearts fulfilled, broken and fulfilled again.
So I ask you today, do you have it in your heart to donate to help keep the doors to The Hermitage open? Any contribution you send will help us to continue to rescue abused, injured, and thrown away felines like Crush and Stache and enable our dedicated staff to continue to care for the unloved and abandoned.
Remember, no matter the amount, 100% of your donation goes directly to care for these precious souls.
Thank you for your compassion and continued support. It truly means the world to us.
Blessings.
