Ty Hobson-Powell hasn't added a story.
When Ty Hobson-Powell, B.A. ’11, M.A. '13, finished high school in two years, he was only getting started. After enrolling at Howard University in fall 2009 at the age of 13—as a sophomore, thanks to community college and online credits—he transferred to the University of Baltimore in summer 2010 and earned his bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies, with concentrations in Psychology, History, and Government & Public Policy, in May of 2011 at the age of 15. The Washington, D.C. then went on to attend Liberty University, the world's largest Christian university, where he received his Master's in Human Services (Counseling) in May of 2013. Ty is now currently enrolled in a graduate program at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Not surprisingly, his accomplishments have attracted the attention of CNN, BET, CNBC and a host of other media outlets. Despite his young age, Hobson-Powell seems to take it all in stride and with a sense of humility. For years, Ty has been going to colleges, primary schools, churches and community centers speaking to thousands of youth about the importance of staying on task and speaking to parents about how to encourage their children to reach their potential.
#Inspire2014 is a good faith campaign to go out across the world and inspire our youth. All too often, youth feel as though they have to pick and choose whether to be cool or smart. This campaign is to show that both are possible. In so many inner cities, our youth are running a race with no finish line, using their circumstances as an excuse for their actions and inactions. We hope that Ty, an 18 year old with multiple degrees whose origins trace back to living with 4 other family members in a 1 bedroom apartment in Southwest DC, can present an element of relatability to a wide spectrum of youth. We hope that they see in him someone who came from similar or worst circumstances, overcame the obstacles that faced him and went on to become successful. More or less, we just want to inspire.
Your donation will support a dream. All the funds earned will be used to further the mission of #Inspire2014, by giving Ty the means necessary to spread his message to as many people as possible. It is our hope that there are enough kind souls out there to make this happen. In a world where the media is constantly highlighting the youth for doing all the wrong things, they could use a positive role model.
