Dawson March:
Keith and I don’t have human kids, we finally found out we were going to be Corgi parents in the summer of 2007! We were so excited and could hardly wait for him to come home at 10 weeks old (I even took 2 weeks off “puppy leave” from my job). Dawson ran our house from the minute we brought him home and he gave both Keith and I some serious lessons in being Corgi parents – we loved every minute of it!
Fast forward to March 2014. One morning we woke up and Dawson didn’t insist on his breakfast like he normally does, and we noticed he had swelling on the side of his face and his neck. We took him to a vet semi near to us (we live fairly far from town) and they told us he had what appeared to be an abscess and a very high fever. They put a drain into the worst lump, ran some basic blood work, gave him some light antibiotics and sent him home. He got a little better for a day and then continued to get worse, his fever came back, new lumps appeared, he wouldn’t eat, and he started to urinate blood. We then took him to our normal family Vet in town who ran tons of blood work, put in yet another drain for another lump that had come up, and changed his antibiotics to something much stronger. Again, he got a little better and then got much worse. We had numerous trips to the Pet Emergency Hospital and were finally given a referral to an internal veterinarian medicine specialist (Dr. S as we started calling her). She ordered an abdominal ultra sound, and a head/neck CT along with a very detailed infectious disease/tick panel. She did biopsies, changed his meds, and he spent yet more days and nights at the emergency clinic hooked up to IV fluids and being monitored 24 hrs a day.
After a whole month – she has finally come to the diagnosis of Canine Lupus.
In one way we were devastated to hear this – but in another – we are relieved because this is not a death sentence for our boy – it just means giving him support when he has flare ups (however severe they may be) and enjoying him every single day with his Corgi “brother” Bruce (yes- we are admittedly foster failures).
Our vet bills are now approximately $6,000 (I have yet to add up the new ones to come in) and we truly appreciate any help we are offered. Saving Dawson was never a question – we knew we would do whatever it took to bring our Corgi boy home again.
Thanks from the bottom of our hearts!
Sincerely,
Seana, Keith, and Dawson March
