Thanksgiving Food Drive:
This September, our club will be initiating our very FIRST Food Drive in collaboration with Harvest Project. We will be gathering donations at our school, Handsworth Secondary through student-made food drive boxes as well as requesting donations from peers and others outside of school. We aim to help those in need, especially during a time of gratitude, warmth, and fulfillment. We hope to bring smiles and comfort at dinner on Thanksgiving Day to our community!

Club Mandate
Our club’s mission is to support our local community through student-led service projects. Each year, we organize rotating initiatives such as food drives, toy drives, and school supply drives to respond to real community needs. Through these efforts, we aim to make a positive impact while helping students develop leadership, empathy, and teamwork.
What we are doing:
Handsworth Takes Action is a student-led club organizing community service projects to support local families and individuals in need. Our planned initiatives include a Food Drive in October 2026, a Toy Drive in December 2026, and a Book and School Supplies Drive in May 2027.
Through these projects, students will collect, organize, and donate useful items to our local organization Harvest Project.
By supporting our fundraiser, you are helping students create meaningful change in the community while building leadership, teamwork, and empathy.
About Us:
Handsworth Takes Action is a student-led club started by a group of Grade 10 students at Handsworth Secondary School. We created this club because we wanted to take a more active role in supporting our local community and helping people in need. Our club brings students together to plan meaningful service projects, such as food drives, toy drives, and book and school supplies drives. Through these initiatives, we hope to give back to the community with student efforts while building a stronger sense of connection and empathy within our school community. As a new club, we are still learning and growing, but our main goal is to strengthen our connections and make a positive change in our local community with students. |

How funds will be used:
All funds raised through this page will go toward supporting Harvest Project as part of our club’s food drive initiative. Harvest Project helps individuals and families in our local community who are facing challenges with food security and other essential needs. By donating, you are helping us support Harvest Project’s work and contribute to a meaningful local cause. This fundraiser is focused specifically on our food drive collaboration with Harvest Project. |
Why This Matters to Us:All of us have contributed and given back to our community in various ways. From the experience and knowledge gained, we were able to specifically highlight how we all enjoy collaborating with others across all ages. For further evidence, we are all involved with the Handsworth Writing Lab and play a huge role in the success of students ranging from grades 8-12. We have also volunteered for a wide variety of clubs and organizations that have allowed us to communicate with locals in Vancouver while giving back to our community. A more personal experience that we can relate to is how every year, during winter, we set aside time and money to buy new toys or amenities for families or citizens who aren’t able to purchase gifts for themselves. A fond memory was when my dad took me with him to deliver the gifts we bought. As I was 8 years old myself, I was surprised at the contrast between my home and this family’s home, which seemed to be just as loving and warm as my own, although it was merely three rooms with one bed. When I gave them their gifts, I always remember how appreciative and grateful they were through their endless hugs and the way their eyes lit up at the toys I chose for them. Ever since then, I always kept the thought that everyone deserves a gift of their own and to have support during challenging times. |  |

All spending of funds is confined to operation of Harvest
Project’s approved programs and projects. Each restricted
contribution designated for a specific program or project will
be used as designated with the understanding that when the need
for such a program or project has been met, or cannot be
completed for some reason as determined by Harvest Project, the
remaining restricted contributions designated for such program
or project will be used where needed most as determined by the
Board of Directors.
