Rifugio began as a vision shaped by color, nature, and the way children move through the world when they feel free and connected. I first felt it while living in Cortina, surrounded by mountains, natural playscapes, and children deeply engaged with their bodies, their creativity, and each other. That feeling stayed with me and eventually became Rifugio Austin.

Over the past few years, we have built something deeply intentional. Rifugio is an intentionally micro, art-centered school where children learn through projects, collaboration, and exploration. They build museums, write and film their own stories, study global ideas through art, and learn how to regulate themselves within a community. Every child is met where they are. Every voice matters. The process of learning is just as important as the outcome.

Our students are not just learning academics. They are learning how to think, how to express themselves, and how to exist in relationship with others.

Now, we are one step away from securing a permanent home.

We are currently in the process of finalizing a space in Austin that would allow Rifugio to grow sustainably and continue serving our families long-term. Our Conditional Use Permit is moving forward, and with that comes the opportunity to root this work in a place we can truly call home.

In order to open our doors and meet safety requirements, we are required to install a fire sprinkler system.

The cost is $40,000.

This system is not just a requirement. It is the final step that allows us to legally and safely operate in this space. It is what stands between where we are now and a permanent home for Rifugio.

Supporting this campaign means more than funding a building update. It means investing in a different model of education. One that honors creativity, emotional development, and each child’s individual path. It means helping preserve a space where children feel safe to be fully themselves.
