Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
The plea went out for the shelter seeking a rescue for a little girl in bad shape...
"This pet is in urgent need of rescue to ensure ongoing treatment for the following medical condition: Hit by car, fractured paw on the left rear leg and possible fracture of the right rear leg."
This little girl obviously had to be in a great deal of pain with the injuries she had and deserves rescue, but the blast left out one important piece of information that we must always weigh when looking at a dog hit by a car.
Hit by car - anyone who follows us knows that HBC can mean a number of things, one of which is our most challenging injury to fund raise for - the broken pelvis.
Why is the broken pelvis the most challenging injury to fund raise for you ask? Great question! A broken pelvis can go one of two ways - non surgical can be healed with crate rest, but a surgical broken pelvis is the most expensive surgery we do and is super hard to fund raise for as, for the general sake of argument, the dog looks fine - it is not a compelling injury that you can see.
So we had a conundrum on our hands - this little girl needed and deserved rescue and already had a long list of orthopedic injuries that were going to be expensive to fix not even counting a broken pelvis, if there was one.
Was another rescue going to step up for her? We didn't know.
Did she deserve to sit there in that kind of pain waiting for someone else to do the right thing?
She did not.
We placed our hold. We will take her.
She had to spend one more night in the shelter on pain meds and today her freedom ride came for her to bring her the Christmas Miracle she deserved.
She will start her new life over at Twinkle and she was transported to LeadER Animal Hospital where an exam revealed not one, but multiple pelvic fractures (likely surgical), a right femur fracture, left metatarsal ones fractured, and other bumps and bruises. She will be placed on an IV, some really good pain meds, and have a surgical consult tomororw,
We could have turned away. That was not the right thing.
We did the right thing. The right thing is not easy or cheap and we are likely looking at $7,000+ to put Twinkle back together again.
We are here on bended knee hoping that you agree with us that her life was worth saving. It is a list of injuries longer than she is big, but we think she is worth it. If everyone donates even just a few dollars, we can cover Twinkle's care AND be ready for the next one who needs us to do the right thing so they have a chance. Can Twinkle count on you for even a few dollars to help her reach her goal?
