Daniel Burgi hasn't added a story.

I like to think of myself as being rational, practical, and efficient. Going the extra mile checks none of these boxes - and yet, I am super excited for the upcoming Himalayan life fundraiser, THE EXTRA MILE. In the Himalayas, children literally walk the extra mile each day to make it to the closest school. Parents go the extra mile in terms of sacrificing income to pay for school fees. The Extra Mile is an opportunity for us to meaningfully go the extra mile, thus contributing to Himalayanlife's work of education in Nepal and India.

On Saturday June 5th, I will go the extra mile(s) at Robson Square in Downtown Vancouver.  I have chosen this urban setting for the walk (not my preference for a hike) in honour of the many parents of children at our school and homes in Nepal, who are labouring as migrant workers in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Delhi, Bangkok, Doha, or some other urban center in order to make ends meet for their family.

The loop starts by the ice rink, up the steps into the square and clockwise around the Provincial Court building. Then off Hornby back into the Square, past the steps of the Art Gallery, presently home to 215 pairs of children’s shoes :-(, and from the North side back down to the ice rink. The loop is just about 1/3 a mile long, and I am going to walk it from 8AM to 5PM.   I will carry a backpack containing lists of all the names of all the kids HimalayanLife is presently working with, and also the names of all or staff and volunteers. That’s more than 2,500 names. The aim is to do this loop 96 times - once for each of the former street kids in the care of our staff in Pokhara, working hard on their basic education.
While Covid does not allow us to make this a public event, please feel free to join me for a mile or so, going The Extra Mile at Robson Square. You could even relieve me of that backpack for a stretch. We will make sure to maintain social distance.
On Sunday, Karina and I will be going the extra mile by bicycle. From 8AM to 5PM, I will be riding the Stanley Park loop, along the seawall. Karina will join me in the afternoon. The aim is to ride one mile each in honour of the 140 Himalayan Life staff members, whose tireless effort makes education possible for hundreds of children in Nepal and India. This is 22 times around Stanley Park.
Please feel free to join me for however many miles you wish. I will look for familiar faces whenever I peddle past Brockton Point and Third Beach.

So, if you would like to go the extra mile with us to make education possible for children in the Himalayas, but haven’t quite come up with a plan yet, this is your opportunity! Join me for the extra mile on foot at Robson Square on Saturday, or join me for a few miles by bicycle on Sunday.   In order to make the Extra Mile even more meaningful and effective, reach out to your peers and ask them to support you. I f you  can’t  go the extra mile this weekend, please consider supporting my effort.
Thank you.

Go The Extra Mile for Education in the Himalayas

In the Himalayas, in order to receive education, one needs to go the extra mile. Children walk many miles every day to make it to the closest school, parents sacrifice income to pay for school fees, and Himalayan Life provides education opportunities for children and families who might otherwise not have the chance.

Why go to all this effort? Education is essential in creating thriving children, families and communities. When a child is educated, the cyclical nature of poverty cannot continue, it gives hope and a future.

Join us on June 5th + 6th for The Extra Mile, an awareness and fundraising event for education in the Himalayas.

Whether you run, walk, bike, paddleboard, kayak, swim, or even unicycle, go The Extra Mile to support children's education.
