Sustainable Marblehead is an all-volunteer community organization dedicated to connecting, supporting, and empowering residents, businesses, and town officials to create a healthy, sustainable, and resilient community.

Sustainable Marblehead advances initiatives that educate, reduce carbon emissions and waste, save money and energy, and protect and preserve Marblehead's unique quality of life for future generations.

Since its founding, Sustainable Marblehead has:

  • Completed a Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report which documents the sources of Marblehead's carbon emissions.
  • Sponsored two warrant articles at Town Meeting which were overwhelmingly approved by Marblehead voters. The first set a town-wide goal of using 100% carbon-free energy in electricity production, building energy use, and transportation, and moving with fiscal responsibility and all deliberate speed to achieve this goal. The second called for the town to adopt a stricter energy efficiency code for new construction, one of the requirements for Marblehead to become a “Green Community” eligible for state grants to reduce carbon emissions.
  • Sponsored a highly publicized and successful Sustainability Fair which attracted more than 700 attendees. Fairgoers were able to test-drive electric cars and bikes, learn about renewable energy, and see examples of sustainable practices.
  • Cleaned Devereux and Riverhead Beaches twice a week during the summer months to rid the beaches of trash and marine debris, particularly plastics made of petrochemicals that contribute to climate change, pollute our oceans, and harm sea animals.
  • Completed a town-wide survey of how many local food and other establishments are still using plastic and began compiling information on compostable alternatives.
  • Succeeded in lowering the cost of curbside composting by half by encouraging more than 300 households to participate in the program. According to the Health Department, increased composting is the most important thing Marblehead can do to reduce its waste stream.
  • Worked with the Marblehead Municipal Light Department to promote electric vehicles, EV charging stations, and renewable energy.
  • Created a new BIKE MARBLEHEAD group which is working to make Marblehead more bike-friendly.
  • Produced driver and biker safety videos which will run on MHTV.
  • Supported the town's Complete Streets initiative, which will identify infrastructure improvements to make walking and biking safer and easier and allow the town to access state funds to pay for these improvements.
  • Supported improvements to the Rail Trail/Railroad Right of Way being overseen by the Board of Selectmen and Town Planner.
  • Began advocating for a town-wide no idling campaign and the town's participation in the state's Safe Routes to School program.
