Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
We have all likely thought about what it would be like to be a dog, alone, afraid, and injured in a shelter, but have you ever thought what it is like to be the person who has to go to the shelter to evaulate the dogs and determine if they are "doxie enough" for us to take?
Every day, our shelter team visits the shelters to assess the dogs marked as "doxie" to determine if we can help. They brave the heartbreaking shelters and walk the aisles to find the dog in question and then are challenged to look that dog in the eye to try and get an idea of their temperment and conditions, all the while knowing, if they are not an obvious pure breed doxie, that they and their ability to get approval from the medical and fundraising teams are likely the one thing standing between this dog they are in front of and that that dog being put down after languishing in a cage for 5 days. That is what our intake team goes through every day at the shelter and this video is just one hearbreaking sample of what it is like.
The sweet soul in the video is a boy who came to the shelter from the streets emaciated, dehydrated, suffering from demodex mange, and bleeding out his nose....he is obviously not a full doxie, but how do you walk away? How do you look him in the eyes and say "sorry, I can't help"?
We cannot do that and we hope that you agree....we are nearly $9,000 light this week as our fundraising for the Puerto Rican 7 and Cherry and Pups has not gone well at all, but we can't walk away...we just can't.
As this post goes live, this little boy we have named Maximus is getting ready to be discharged from Miami Dade Animal Services and the Team at LeadER Emergency Hospital has been alerted that we are en route with Maximus and two others that today will join our DRSF Family and LeadER is standing by and ready for us to triage them all.
Maximus will need a full blood workup, IV Fluids, supervised food intake, medicated baths, and an assessment of why he is bleeding out his nose and we are back on the hook for another $1,500. They all deserve a chance and we had to give Maximus his....will you help us help him?
