Ita Callagy hasn't added a story.
Each year, the Sligo Christmas Splash fundraises for a different
local charity-I've been taking part in this since 2006, and it's
become a major part of my Christmas Day celebrations. For those of you
not familiar with it, basically, at 12 noon, I, along with a bunch of
other silly souls, will run/jump/fall/swim into the Atlantic for a few
mins to get together, sing Jingle Bells together, and generally splash
about in the freezing cold Atlantic in honour of a great local
cause.....this year, it's the Simon Community.
(northwestsimon.ie)
Homelessness is shit. Excuse the language, but it is. I'm typing
this from my toasty bedroom, looking out at the torrential rain on a
lazy Sunday afternoon, and I'm thinking how lucky I am not be one of
those who has no place to call home, someone who has nowhere to go but
shellters on a day like today. How lucky I am not to be someone
wandering the streets soaked in worn out shoes, wondering where I
might be able to go with virtually no money that won't kick me out the
second they cop I'm homeless.
How lucky I am. And how lucky you
are to be able read that and think "I've never known that. Nor
will I ever know life like that".
The thing is, I've met many homeless people, both through work
and through personal life. There's such a broad mix of people in
homeless shelters, people who have only recently fallen on hard times,
addicts, junkies, ex-junkies, ex-addicts, and people who are seeing a
light at the end of a tunnel knowing they'll be out of sheltered
accomodation soon. A lot of those people were like you and I, they had
a home, they had family, they had a "normal" life. Then
something shit in their life happened, family troubles, money
troubles, life troubles. And now they're on the streets, looking for
somewhere to sleep night after night. Wearing their shoes out day
after day walking the streets trying to find somewhere they won't be
causing trouble, or get in to trouble....
Days like today remind me how lucky I am to have a roof over my
head, to know that no matter how bad things get, I'll always have
friends and family I can turn to. Some people don't.
That's where the Simon Community come. They provide support for
people who are homeless, they try and support previously homeless
people who are being re-homed, and so much more. I know times are
tough for folk, but if you can spare even €5, you'll make a difference
to someone's life. So g'wan, forego that extra pint, that 4 lights
meal at the end of a night, that cheesy Penneys X-mas t-shirt, and
give it to the Simon Community. I'd appreciate it, and they'd
appreciate it a HUGE amount.
ta muchly y'all,xx
