Pittsburg: Two-year-old girl hit by car, seriously injured
By Erin Ivie eivie@bayareanewsgroup.com Posted: 09/24/2013 06:08:22 AM PDT | Updated: about 3 hours ago
PITTSBURG -- A two-year-old girl was seriously injured Monday evening after she was hit by a passing car while chasing a ball into the street, police said.
The toddler, whose family was visiting a house in the 100 block of Jimno Ave., was playing outside with several other children about 6:05 p.m. when their ball bounced into the street, Pittsburg police Lt. Ron Raman said. The little girl ran after the ball and into the street, where she was hit by a passing SUV.
According to Raman, there were several cars parked on the street, and the Pittsburg resident driving the white SUV did not see the child as she darted out into the road. The driver, who was the only person in the SUV, stopped and tried to provide medical aid to the child, Raman said, and he is cooperating with the police investigation.
Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, Raman said.
The girl was airlifted to Childrens Hospital Oakland with serious injuries, Raman said. An update on the girl's condition was not immediately available Monday evening.
The toddler was hit less than 12 hours after an SUV hit and killed 12-year-old Burgess Hu in far-east Contra Costa County, in front of the middle school he was headed to on his bicycle. Both adults said they did not see the children as they veered in front of their vehicles, and neither driver has been charged with any wrongdoing.
