Sirrita Darby hasn't added a story.
My name is Sirrita and I am an Educator who has an amazing opportunity to make a difference for both teachers and students world wide through Limited Resources Teacher Training (LRTT) for a month over the summer of 2017.
I have had a passion for teaching and learning since I was a young child. I teach at Detroit Leadership Academy in the heart of Detroit, MI. I am in my 2nd year of teaching and will earn my Masters Degree in Education from UofM in May, well preparing me for this opportunity. I feel there is so much more I can be doing as an educator though over the summers and that is why Limited Resources Teacher Training (LRTT) is such a great opportunity for me. To be able to take all the amazing training and education I have received and spread it around the world would be an honor. Here is more information about LRTT. Also check out their website at; lrtt.org .
More about LRTT:
Our Mission:
Every child has a great teacher.
Our Vision:
We're creating an empowered global community of teachers through leading engaging and inspiring teacher training.
Our Objective:
Through cycles of workshops, observations and coaching we support teachers to plan and deliver better lessons. Since 2015 we have co-led training with our network of LRTT Lead Teachers with the aim of building long term capacity.
Ghana Context:
There is a great need for improving education in Ghana with 98% of year two students unable to read and understand, whilst only 58% of primary students go through to secondary school. There is a real need to support pre-school and elementary teachers.
Training is based on tested strategies, which use international best practice while considering local challenges and contexts. Key elements include:
Peer-to-peer learning: Empowering students to learn from one another, particularly through group work, thus building leadership skills while providing a learning solution for large classes
Differentiation: Catering to the needs of children of a variety of abilities, stretching the fastest and supporting the slowest learners to create positive learning outcomes for all
Higher order thinking: Foster independence and initiative in students to solve problems and use creativity in the classroom and as a life-skill
Motivation: Modern strategies of praise and reward systems help drive forward learning and achievement (used alongside a tool-book of fun activities)
LRTT works collaboratively with District Education Officers and local organizations to identify schools suitable for training. Schools are chosen on geographical proximity and the head teacher must commit to engage all teachers, participate in all training, and adopt a whole-school approach. LRTT seek to create systemic change, with an environment where teachers are motivated to develop professionally and are able to learn from one another. This can only be achieved with whole-school participation. More than 30 schools have taken part in training, ranging across government schools and low-cost private schools at both the primary and secondary levels. Training takes place in a residential course over the period of 1 month. The course is led by international teachers who volunteer their time as part of the LRTT model.
