Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association hasn't added a story.
Environment, ecology, art and fun; learning about bugs, frogs, animals and birds; drawing and painting them! These are some of the great activities that happen during the Fraser Valley Brain Injury Association's annual Young at Arts Summer Camp out at the Blue Heron Reserve.
Young at Arts Summer camp is for children who have an acquired brain injury (ABI) and their siblings or to children who have a parent with ABI. Acquired brain injury (ABI) is an injury to the brain that happens after birth from car crashes, falls, sports, child abuse, infections, disease, etc… and can result in long term disabilities.
Marilyn, a grandmother of two children whose mom is affected by acquired brain injury from a tumour writes;
“Both Elizabeth and Joshua completely enjoyed the ‘arts’ programme provided. When asked this year if they wanted to participate, it was an immediate and exuberant ‘yes’. Their lives have been challenged because of their mom being ill.
Heather has expressed to me her frustration of not being able to do and provide activities for her children without a lot of support from friends and family. This programme that you have is a huge benefit for her psyche. She has stated to me ‘It's nice that something good can happen for MY kids BECAUSE of my brain tumor ‘. It's a challenge to find benefits in her situation and this programme is definitely a benefit. Many thanks.”
Can you imagine a child not being able to experience the joys of summer camp because their family can't afford it, their sibling/parent has special needs or they have complex needs themselves?
ABI can touch anyone at any time and has a huge financial and emotional impact on families making it very difficult for families to afford a summer camp for their kids. Sometimes, children with ABI can't go to regular camps because they need extra support that's just not available. Young at Arts makes it possible for these children to be together in a regular day camp environment.
Children with ABI often have problems keeping friends because of changes to their personalities, communication and social skills issues after they've been injured. Young at Arts gives the children a chance to be with others who share the same experiences in a fun, educational place.
Two of the Foundations that have been long-time supporters are not able to provide funding this year to Young at Arts due to changes their operations or mandates. Please help us keep the Young at Arts Summer Camp available to these children by donating what you can.
